  1.               FAMILY TREE JOURNAL TEXT EDITOR

  3. Data entry with the editor defaults to insert mode. You  may
  4. move the cursor with the <LEFT-ARROW> and <RIGHT-ARROW> keys
  5. to any place on the line without disturbing anything.
  6.  
  7. In the insert mode, the <HOME> and <END> keys move the  cur-
  8. sor to the beginning or end of the current line if it is not
  9. already at that respective position. Typing  the  <HOME>  or
  10. <END>  keys  when  the cursor is already at the beginning or
  11. the end of the line will move to the first or last  line  on
  12. the  screen.  If  the  cursor  is  positioned  at  the first
  13. character of the first line, the <HOME> key will display the
  14. first  screen  in  the  file.  If  the cursor is at the last
  15. character of the last line, the <END> key will  display  the
  16. last screen in the file.

  18. Typed  characters  will  be  inserted  into the text and all
  19. characters to the right of the cursor will shift towards the
  20. end  of  the line. The <DELETE> key will erase the character
  21. under the cursor and the <INSERT> key toggle the  mode  from
  22. insert to normal mode. (Normal mode requires that you retype
  23. the entire line when you wish to make changes).

  25. This editor does not support word-wrap so anything  that  is
  26. forced off of the right end of the line is lost.

  28. You  may  enter  foreign  characters  by holding the ALT key
  29. while typing the decimal code (IBM extended ASCII)  for  the
  30. character.  This  will work for most of the extended charac-
  31. ters except those between the values 200 and 219 (some  line
  32. drawing characters).

  34. The  <UP-ARROW> and <DOWN-ARROW> keys will scroll the cursor
  35. up and down.
  36.  
  37. The <PAGE-UP>  and <PAGE-DOWN> keys will  display  the  pre-
  38. vious or next page of text, except that you will not be able
  39. to go forward past any large area of  blank  lines  (usually
  40. the end of text).

  43.  
  44. F1 HELP - Displays help information.
  45.  
  46. F2 NAMES - Display and edit your name list.
  47.  
  48. F3 SEARCH - Search all data files for information.
  49.  
  50. F4 CENTER - Center the text on the current line.
  51.  
  52. F5 INSERT - Inserts a blank line at the cursor.
  53.  
  54. F6 DELETE - Deletes the current line.
  55.  
  56. F8 SAVE - Saves the information for this individual.
  57.  
  58. The  <ESC>  key  will exit the editor. You must save the in-
  59. formation (F8) before you exit or the changes that you  have
  60. made will be lost.

  62. NOTE:  You may prefer to use your own editor or word proces-
  63. sor to edit this information.  The  miscellaneous  utilities
  64. section  of  the  program provides ways to import and export
  65. files that may  be  used  by  other  programs.  FAMILY  TREE
  66. JOURNAL  was  not  intended  to  be a word processor so this
  67. editor only provides minimal flexibility. The only real  ad-
  68. vantage   to   using   this   selection   is   that  it  can
  69. (theoretically) handle files as  large  as  1000  Megabytes!
  70. Most word processors would choke on a file that big!
